There are many flowers that grow well during the fall months up until the first frost. If you have decided to add a new flower garden for fall flowers, you need to make sure you keep the flowers healthy. One way you can do this is to use mulch.

Mulch

When it comes to mulch there is organic and inorganic. Organic mulches are natural and made of things like bark, straw, old or fresh hay, wood shavings, chipped brush, tree leaves, buckwheat hulls, and more. This type of mulch will break down on its own and provide nutrients to the soil. This also means you have to replace this mulch each year.

Inorganic mulch is made of synthetic materials and will not break down on its own. This includes things like landscaping fabric, plastics, rocks, and stones. Some people prefer inorganic mulches because it saves them money due to not having to replace the mulch as often.

If you have not planted your flowers yet adding two to three inches of mulch should be done first to make things much easier.

Benefits of Using Mulch

There are many benefits of using mulch in your garden. It makes the garden look nicer for one. Mulch also prevents weeds from growing into the garden. This saves you a lot of time because weeds can grow quickly, and some are hard to deal with. Mulch works because the sun is blocked from the weeds.

Mulch will also keep your flowers watered longer. This is beneficial as you may not have as much rainfall during the fall months as compared to the spring. Some fall flowers do require a lot of water. For example, mums can easily dry out if not watered enough. Mulch prevents evaporation so the soil stays watered longer. Also, it protects the soil on windy days. High winds can cause water to evaporate quicker. This saves you money as you would not have to use as much water.

Mulch helps moderate the soil temperature. It will keep the soil warmer if you have cold nights. It will also help keep the soil cool on hot days. If there is any bare soil in the flower garden mulch can help reduce soil compaction as well as erosion.

You can purchase mulch at a garden center in bags. You can also find a mulch supplier to deliver mulch to you if you require a lot of it.
