Also, it protects the soil on windy days. High winds can cause water to evaporate quicker. This saves you money as you would not have to use as much water. 

Mulch helps moderate the soil temperature. It will keep the soil warmer if you have cold nights. It will also help keep the soil cool on hot days. If there is any bare soil in the flower garden mulch can help reduce soil compaction as well as erosion.
